CHESS QUEEN
Rowena's
Occasional Newsletter
June/July/August 2005

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in my third newsletter.

As some of you know, I tried another author's method of writing a book in six weeks. Some days, especially since term time ended, I had to get up at three in the morning, just to get in a few peaceful hours of writing. Luckily, I am a morning person.

By the way, I did get the novel written and submitted, but it took a little longer than six weeks!

Now, I hope to catch up in this bumper edition of my newsletter. I hope you will enjoy it.

In this issue:

1. Sundry News...

2. Excerpt from: CRIMSON DREAMS
by Margaret L Carter

3. INTERVIEW WITH A COVER MODEL:
CJ HOLLENBACH

4. RECENT REVIEW of FORCED MATE: Writers Write

This month, I feel privileged to share an excerpt from CRIMSON DREAMS by MARGARET L CARTER. I used this excerpt in my Alien Heroes workshop as an example of excellent characterization when the hero is not human. I particularly like the way that Margaret L. Carter handles the logistics of shape-shifting, and the dietary practicalities of how a vampire manages to appear normal in polite society.

Blushing, Heather picked up her spoon. "I thought you didn't eat food."

"I can consume liquids," he said, "though most of them don't do me any good. Things like gelatin and ice cream are liquids, in a sense--that helps when I get stuck with a dinner invitation I can't turn down. And I do get nourishment from milk." He had poured himself a glass, which he sipped while watching Heather eat.

"What we just did," she said, irritably sensing his amusement at the way she groped for words. "We did that when I was eighteen, when I thought I was dreaming?"

"Not like that, dear one. It's incredibly different when you're fully aware of me." He reached across the table to squeeze her hand. "So much better--I had no idea."

"But it couldn't all have been real. Some of it had to be just dreams, fantasies. Zorro and Lancelot and all that."

"I drew upon whatever scenes would please and excite you the most," he said. "Manipulative--that's what you're thinking, isn't it? Well, yes, but I also aimed to enhance your pleasure."

"You did that, all right." Good grief, why can't I quit blushing? "I remember flying. In fact, I dreamed that again recently.
Now, that can't have been real--unless you're holding out on me. You can't turn into a bat, can you?"

"Certainly not. Where do you think the extra mass would go?"

What little she knew of nuclear physics made Heather cringe at the thought.

"However," Devin went on, "we can fly, in a sense. Levitate, actually--even though our bones are a bit lighter than yours, true flight is impossible for a human-size creature. And we do transform into a winged entity. The wings are needed for gliding and steering."

"A giant bat?" Heather rubbed her eyes. "That's even weirder."

"Our scholars believe it's an ancestral form imprinted on the DNA, a shape we discarded as we evolved to mimic your species in every outward respect. One of our psychic gifts involves resuming that shape. The older we grow, the better we can do it, and the longer we can maintain it."

She swallowed a cold lump of ice cream, chasing it with a gulp of juice. "Show me. I'm tired of blundering around in a fog about what's real and what's not."

He finished his milk and gazed thoughtfully at her. "What the observer sees depends a great deal on what he or she expects to see. We can project illusions of whatever monstrous shape we want to assume. But yes, I can show you--without clouding your mind."

Her eyes challenged him. "No illusions."

"No. You'll see only what physically exists."

They cleared the dishes into the sink. "Shall we use the living room?" he said. "More open space there."

"You mean you aren't going to fly with me?"

That remark evoked a rueful laugh. "You flatter me, little one. I'm not Superman. Thanks to you, I've recovered most of my strength, but I'm not up to that." His amusement faded. "Anyway, considering what happened a few hours ago, I think I'd better keep my transformations behind locked doors tonight."

Following him into the living room, Heather wished he hadn't brought up Pam's attack. She had temporarily forgotten about it and had no desire to remember. The unease soon faded, however, in the pleasure of watching him move chairs to the edge of the room and strip off his shirt.

"I'm not old enough to include clothing in the change, as a rule. I can manage it briefly, with deep concentration, but it's so much trouble I don't bother. The elders have the ability to shapeshift garments as if they were part of the skin--I'm a long way from that."

Assuming a stance in the middle of the rug, he held both of her hands. "Watch closely," he said. "I'm not mesmerizing you. This is a physical transmutation."

Electricity tingled from his cool fingers up her arms, making her hair bristle, like static on a cold, dry day. Violet sparks danced over his chest and shoulders. His eyes glowed red. She saw a shadow spreading down his cheeks and torso, a black velvet growth. Fur! she thought. He had a sleek covering of ebony fur.

His ears elongated to points. At the same moment, a pair of pale green wings blossomed from his back. When he smiled at her astonishment, she saw pointed teeth.

"Your mouth--" She brushed his lips with hesitant fingers.

He nipped her without breaking the skin. "This is the only time after childhood that we actually have fangs." He drew her into a close embrace, his lean body hard against hers.

The floor melted from beneath her bare feet. A giddy floating sensation possessed her. She glanced down. Oh, God, I am floating! She clung to Devin in a spasm of panic.

His warm breath stirred her hair. "You're perfectly safe."

Together they drifted toward the ceiling. She risked another look down. At least three feet separated her from the rug. We really are levitating!

Devin spun in a slow circle, making her lightheaded. Gradually he floated down again, while she hugged him so tightly her arms ached. "When I was much younger, I wouldn't have had the power to lift you as well as myself. I'm glad I can do it now."

She burrowed her face into his shoulder, feeling as if she'd just stepped off a Ferris wheel. "You actually flew with me, back then, didn't you?"

The wings draped around him like a cloak. "A few times. More often, I let you share my sensations while I hunted from above the trees."

She looked up into his eyes. "Sounds like an awful risk. Somebody could have seen you."

"I stayed away from populated areas. The few people who might be roaming the woods at night never noticed me. We can make ourselves--well, not literally invisible, but unnoticeable."

She didn't want to pursue that comment. Too many impossible things in one night. Instead, she reached up to finger the curve of a wing. Veined like a dragonfly's wing, it felt as light as parachute silk. The delicate membrane quivered like a leaf in a breeze.

"Careful," he whispered. "In this state, with my cells in flux, I'm extremely sensitive."

"It doesn't hurt, does it?" She couldn't resist stroking the satiny surface.

"You could very easily hurt me there," he said, "but this doesn't. Quite the opposite." With a sigh, he kissed her ear, teasing the lobe with his lips and tongue. His skin felt hotter than usual.

Answering the unspoken question, he said, "The change generates energy. Ah, Heather, you'll have to stop that." But he made no move to retreat from her caresses. His mounting excitement tingled through her own body.

"Please, Devin--" She sank her teeth into his neck.

"Yes--" He lifted his right hand to his mouth and bit his wrist.

She saw and felt his shape melting back to fully human form, just as he pressed his wrist to her lips.

RC: When did you realize that you would like to be a model? How difficult was it to realize that dream? What did you have to do to make your ambition a reality?

CJ: It was never a dream of mine to be a model. Everybody kept suggesting it for me. I never thought I was I was that great looking, but people kept insisting that I do it, like it's just that easy. Finally, after going on several job interviews with my design portfolio and being mistaken for a model at the ad agencies I thought I'd give it a try. After all the Fabio comparisons and people saying "YOU should be on romance novel covers!" (Once again, like it's that easy!) I thought I would try it. I can't believe I stuck with it as long as I did. You have to believe in yourself.

RC: Which came first, an interest in developing a fabulous body, or an interest in becoming a model? Or did you have a previous career for which you had to be in great shape?

CJ: I started to work out seriously after high school. I was fat as an adolescent and that wasn't an easy time. I learned early that it's all about the presentation. In my mind if 200 sit-ups are good 1000 is GREAT. A whacked mentality and may be why my joints are telling me about it now. It helps to be in shape as a model. I was told by an agent from Chicago years ago that even if you never take your shirt off the clothes just hang better on you. She was right. A lot of guys just think you have to be thin.

RC: Tell us about your big break, or your first break. Where were you? How did you feel? Were you nervous the first time you took your shirt off in public?

CJ: I met a girl in Chicago while I was working a cable TV convention there. She was a modeling veteran of romance covers and couldn't believe I hadn't done any. She called all her contacts in New York and told them all about me. She also gave me their phone numbers. A week later I got a call to shoot "The Stone Maiden" in NYC. It was just that easy after 8 years of pounding the pavement and knocking on doors! I was completely prepared for the shoot, so I wasn't at all nervous. I worked too hard to be nervous. If I didn't think I could do it I wouldn't have worked as hard to achieve my goal. I was prepared and knew what I was doing, so I wasn't about to blow it being nervous. If I thought I looked bad taking off my shirt, I wouldn't do it. I don't work out 6 days a week to look like a slob. Being in shape is something everyone can do, not just models.

RC: What was your biggest surprise about the life of a cover model/model? (Good or Bad) that is, how did the reality differ from what you expected?

CJ: It's really surprising how many people will recognize you from something you've done. Be it, a cover, an ad or a TV show. I had an 10 year old kid come up to me in an airport and say "I saw you on TV!!!" Can be very unsettling at times. A lot of people can't handle it. I have friends who won't go out with me in public. Oh well...

RC: I suppose most romance novel readers have notice that cover models shave their chests, and possibly their stomachs. Why is this? Do you use a razor blade, an electric shaver, creams, or do you have it waxed? Are there any other "sacrifices" that male models make?

CJ: Shaving is a necessary evil in modeling. Models shave the same reason bodybuilders do. It shows muscle definition. I shave. I've never waxed. I did use a depilatory once. It was expensive and the hair came back just as fast. My skin was baby smooth for a few days, though. I have decent chest hair. A lot of guys just have patches or not much at all. I'm lucky that I can do both. Women like chest hair as long as it isn't too much or gross.

RC: What sort of hours does a cover model/male model normally work? And what else do you do behind the scenes to promote your career and make the most of your best years?

CJ: My schedule is all over the map. New York covers generally take an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. The time I work modeling is miniscule compared to the prep time. Working-out, getting there, etc. My last Ellora's Cave calendar shoot took an entire day, but considering there were 9 naked guys posing we made good time.

I'm pretty good at promotion. I have a website (www.cjcovermodel.com) and we just turned over 40,000 hits. I hear from people from all over the world, which is very cool. I also have a fan club and a newsletter. It's all free, too.

I recently became involved with a project for aspiring writers to learn how to write a romance novel. I asked over 20 famous and new authors how they do what they do. It was very interesting. I consider all the authors asked to be friends of mine. Authors like Virginia Henley, Heather Graham, Jaid Black.... Rowena Cherry…. all helped me out. I put all their answers on cards.
Questions like "How do you develop your hero/heroine?" and "How do you set your premise?"

I'm also writing for a new magazine called "Lady Jaided" with a regular column called "It's A Model World". You can get a FREE first issue by writing lady@ladyjaided.com Check it out. It's a great magazine.

RC: How many hours a day do you have to spend in the gym to maintain peak appearance? Are there special exercises you do to look good, any tips you could share? How long does it take you to recover peak appearance after a convention, for instance?

CJ: It takes about a full week to recover from an RT convention. Generally, I don't have time to work out during that week with so much going on. Although, while I was in Germany for the conference over there recently I did manage to work out a little. I had a cover shoot in NYC the day after I got back so I had to. I came back weighing less than I went over, no easy feat with all the German food. I was VERY careful about the over eating. Part of the job....

RC: Which is your favorite picture of yourself, perhaps as used for a cover or for some other professional project? And why do you like it?

CJ: It seems all my latest pix are turning out to be my favorites. I like to think I'm getting better with age...like a fine wine.(wink!) I'll turn into vinegar one day too, I'm sure! My latest cover for "Her aster And Commander" illustrated by Jon Paul is really beautiful. I did the cover and stepback cover. It should be out in a few months. That's my new favorite. Everybody who has seen it loves it. Very proud of that.

Rowena's note: the  Her Master And Commander cover is still under wraps.  However, one of Rowena's favorite covers is DESPERATE HEARTS.  Author Lani Aames has very kindly given us permission to show this....

RC: Do you have a website? A newsletter? How can fans learn more about you? Where will you be making appearances in public in the next few months?

CJ: I can be contacted through my website. I keep everyone informed through my monthly newsletter. It's easy to subscribe and it's FREE. I have another appearance coming up soon to promote "Lady Jaided". You never know where I'll be. The Ellora's Cave 2006 "Caveman" calendar will be out soon too. 9 guys, no clothes! What else could you ask for?

FORCED MATE
ROWENA CHERRY

Love Spell, November, 2004
Paperback, 326 pages
ISBN: 0-505-52601-8

Subgenre: Paranormal
Ordering Information:

On Rowena Cherry's Earth, things look pretty much the same as they do now, with one exception. Aliens are among us, hiding in plain site. The beautiful Djinni-vera is a Saurian warrior, trained from birth to assassinate the next god-Emperor of Tigron, Tarrant-Arragon. She is also a formidable psychic, and is engaged to be married to another Djinn (J-J) who also despises Tarrant-Arragon. Tarrant-Arragon knows that he must find a Djinni wife and his spies tell him that Djinni-vera is perfect for him. So he heads to Earth, impersonating a Saurian Knight, and promptly kidnaps Djinni-vera, takes her to his starship and heads for his home planet. Naturally, Djinni is furious and also suspicious of who Arragon really is. But he is being his most charming self, taking the ridiculous nickname of Tigger and tempting Djinni with everything he can think of. They are both quite intelligent, and so the chess match begins (Forced Mate is a chess term). Arragon must find a way to trick Djinni into marrying him before she finds out who he is and kills him. To make the game more complicated, J-J is undercover in Arragon's Army, Arragon's mother is a double agent masquerading as something else entirely, and Arragon's new Earth valet (a hilarious ex-English mercenary named Grievous) is beginning to feel more loyalty to Djinni than to Arragon. Add in the Djinn culture's obsession with all things sensual and you have one wild journey indeed.

As the title implies, the galaxy is a chess board and knights, queens, kings and pawns are all in play. Conspiracies abound and traps, both verbal and physical, are sprung on the unwary. A PEARL Award finalist for Best Paranormal Romance, Forced Mate breaks new ground in the genre with its mixture of science fiction, romance, and comedy of manners. Rowena Cherry writes with intellectual bite, sizzling sensuality and a wicked sense of humor.

Erratum from the Amanda Ashley interview.

The name of her novel DARKER DREAMS has subsequently been changed by her editor. The novel is now titled DESIRE AFTER DARK!

Amanda Ashley has shared a preview of her back cover blurb:

Sexy vampires, dangerous devotion, unparalleled romance-no one does desire after dark like bestselling author Amanda Ashley. Now, in her enthralling new novel, she explores a passion as smoldering as it is risky...

Vicki Cavendish knows she should be careful. After all, there's a killer loose in town-one who drains women of blood, women with red hair and green eyes just like her. She knows she should tell police about the dark, gorgeous man who comes into the diner every night, the one who makes her feel a longing she's never felt before. The last thing she should do is invite the beautiful stranger into her house...

Cursed to an eternity of darkness, Antonio Battista has wandered the earth, satisfying his hunger with countless women, letting none find a place in his heart. But Victoria Cavendish is different. Finally, he has found a woman to love, a woman who accepts him for what he is-a woman who wants him as much as he wants her...which is why he should leave. But Antonio is a vampire, not a saint. What is his, he'll fight to keep and protect. And Victoria Cavendish needs protecting...from the remorseless enemy who would make her his prey...and from Antonio's own uncontrollable hunger...
