March/April 2006

Welcome to the MARCH and APRIL issue of my occasional newsletter.

Right away, I would like to thank readers who came to support the booksigning on Feb 11th at the wonderful Streets of Westchester branch of Barnes and Noble!

I’d also like to thank anyone who voted for MATING NET in the Judge a Book by its cover contest (it came third in class), and anyone who voted for either MATING NET or FORCED MATE in some of the other contests and polls.

I was absolutely overwhelmed and thrilled that MATING NET was a PEARL AWARDS finalist, and that it came equal fourth in the preditors and editors poll, http://www.critters.org/predpoll/ under short story Romance.

There were a lot of fabulous entries in both those polls, so I am very grateful to all who voted. Thank you!

I should also like to mention that I have been blogging… not often, but when I can.
I have out takes from INSUFFICIENT MATING MATERIAL and some vulgar ruminations on www.outdamnedstory.blogspot.com and also at www.rowenacherry.blogspot.com

Thank you, Jimmy Thomas for granting this opportunity to interview you.

RC: You have a very impressive resume: TV, film, commercials, print work, romance novel covers, magazines, catalogues, and more.

If one aspect of your varied career in the public eye stands out in your mind as more enjoyable, which is it? and why do you think you excelled at it?

Or, what was it about that activity that was more fun or more rewarding or less frustrating than the others?

JT: Thank you!  All my careers have rewarded me in many ways.  It would be hard to pick one that would stand out.  There are things about each one that I enjoy or am passionate about, which is why I continue to do them all.  However, my most passionate things are anything involving martial arts and movie-making.

RC: On your website you mentioned a "dance off" competition against a Jamaican ten-man team. What is a "dance off" team? And, do you feel it is true that some people are genetically programmed to be better at certain activities? If not, what--in your opinion-- is it that makes one person more athletic or a better dancer than another ?

JT: I was invited for that dance-off contest, but I chose not to attend.  I had other things going on at that time.  However, other competitions I have been in that involved dance skills, such as "Hit The Beach" in Jamaica were more fun than a competition.  As for having dancing rhythm/talent genetically, I wouldn't say that at all.  My brother was completely into heavy metal and couldn't dance for the life of him until I took him out to clubs with me and showed him how.  It just took enough watching and trying for himself to learn how to dance, which is how I taught myself.  Almost anything just takes practice.

RC: What is it like to be a male performer in an elite male review group?   What does a male review entertainer do?  What do you look at while performing?  What do you think about?  Is there anything you do NOT think about?

JT: Performing in a male revue group was very hard at first.  Believe it or not, I'm a fairly shy person so I had to quickly get over my shyness.  Male Revue Entertainers are male strippers basically.  However, the difference between male & female strippers is that male revues are more about the act/entertainment than the stripping.  Your clothes stay on almost the entire act until the very end where you strip down to your undies.  It's the show itself that you put on that is the entertainment.  As for what I look at, that all depends on the stage.  Sometimes the lights are so bright that you can't see anyone in front of you.  When I can, I just look at all the ladies in the crowd and give them a smile.  What I think about is my routine so I don't mess up, lol.

RC: Are you still an Architect?

How do you reconcile the demands of two careers?

Do homeowners who seek your architectural services know about your fitness services?  Have you ever had someone in the gym do a double take or vice versa?

JT: Yes, I still do architectural work. I subcontract myself with various architectural firms in Los Angeles and Florida. I'm currently working on a new, ecological designed home in the mountains in Hawaii, a renovation of a Synagogue and a shopping plaza in Beverly Hills, a rebuild of a home in Glendale Hills, and a 7,000 square foot add-on and indoor pool to an existing home in Los Angeles. My time is my own, so it's easy for me to manage it all to get all my work done and still have plenty of time for my other careers and for myself. I have yet to run into a customer/client at the gym, that I've done architectural work for though..

RC: What is an "Extreme Bartender" ?  Is it anything like the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?

JT: Yes, it is very similar to Tom Cruise in "Cocktail", only more entertaining and more sexy!  Us male Bartenders would only wear cut-off jean shorts and boots, and our bodies would be oiled down, while the female Bartenders would wear string bikinis!  We would do various dance/parody acts on stage and on our bars, of old and new music groups/songs.  We'd do strip acts, give body shots on the bar, and put on all sorts of fun and sexy shows for entertainment.  While bartending we'd flare with bottles, blow fire, light-up fancy shots, etc.  It was a BLAST!

RC:  How long did Extreme Bartending last?  How long did you enjoy doing it, and at what point did it cease to be fun?

JT: I was in Europe doing Extreme Bartending for about 2 years.  I enjoyed every night of it.  It never ceased to be fun.  Well maybe when the uptight co-owner worked.  He was too strict and killed a lot of the fun on those nights.  Although we still found ways around his watchful eye ;)

RC: In your biography, you mention that your tour took you all over Europe and Egypt .  Were there any venues that made you nervous or where you felt in danger of any kind?  Or were you--as a muscular gentleman-- treated with respect and decorum at all times all over the world?

JT: Nervous?  Not at all.  In fact, in Egypt everyone called me "Rambo", lol.  Kids were following me and asking me to flex all the time.  It was weird though seeing military all over the roads in Egypt standing behind small, metal barricades with machine guns in their hands, as if they were about to use them at any time.  It was such an experience to travel around Egypt and Europe . It was great to see things that most only see in text books (Amsterdam, Den Haag, Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, San Marco Square, ride a Gondola, the Coliseum, the Vatican, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the French Riviera, the beaches of Barcelona, Gran Canaria Islands, The Great Pyramids, Valley of the Dead, scuba diving in the Red Sea).  I'd like to tour Asia next.

RC:Among your many physical interests you mention Construction.  Is that a reference to your Architectural training, or do you build things for fun or profit?

JT: My father had always been in carpentry.  I worked with him building houses and installing swimming pools for his construction company ever since I could swing a hammer.  I took wood-working and drafting in high school, and followed that trade through college.  Since then I've remodeled many homes, including my own in Florida , and was a Senior Designer for Florida 's largest Architect Firm for 4 years. I had always wanted my own office, suit & tie job.  Then once I had it, I realized that it wasn't for me.  It was keeping me down.  I do miss framing and roofing though, so I build things for my mother at her house when I visit her.

RC: an you give me some insights into what happens during a cover shoot... how long it takes, what the poses feel like... whether "clinch" poses are enjoyable for the models.

JT: I have shot with over 50 female Models in various, romantic poses.  All poses are fun for me.  It's just like acting.  Whatever the shot calls for, you play it out through your body language and expressions.  I always get a bunch of great shots with each shoot, even if the female is new to it.  My comfort with posing quickly relaxes the Models I work with.

RC: Is there a story behind how you were "discovered"?  Or is yours a story of personal persistence and drive?

JT: Completely of personal persistence and drive!  I'm a very driven, motivated, and competitive person.  I go after what I want and I get it ;)  Unfortunately I take on so many things that interest me, which starts to slow down my progress of each endeavor.

RC: How much of your success do you attribute to your interest in martial arts?

JT: Soon to be 90%!  I'm coming out with a new fitness concept as we speak.  It's similar to Tae-Bo, but a much more sensible and efficient system. You'll see me on Oprah soon ;)

RC: What is the difference between Kenpo Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, and Jiu-jitsu?

JT: Kenpo is self defense.  Taking someone's offensive attack and using it right into a defense technique rendering them defeated.  Tae Kwon Do is a sport karate, mostly fancy, high flying kicks, not very realistic for defense.  Shotokan is a strict form with straight, squared movements.  Jiu-jitsu is very fluid and affective.  It involves a lot of wrist locks, arm bars, leg locks, and grappling on the floor.  Kenpo is my ultimate favorite.  It doesn't favor one thing over another.  It uses all vices to defend and attack.

And, for a romance novelist who needs a stylish fight scene, which school of martial arts would you recommend?  And why?

JT: Schools all vary on the Instructors and methods of instruction.  Kenpo or Kung Fu would be my suggestions though.

RC: If an author wanted to send you a fight scene for your professional and expert input on whether or not she had properly described authentic moves, would you be willing to act as a paid consultant?  If so, how would an author contact you?

JT: Of course.  As I said, my passions are martial arts and movie-making.  I recently choreographed fight scenes for two short films that I was in.  I can always be reached at my website.

RC:  Your biography suggests that you offer personal training services.  Where can ladies and gentlemen in need of a personal trainer find your rates?  Or do you work through a fitness club?

JT: My rates vary on how many days a week I'd be training you, or if you were only looking for a few sessions if you're a quick learner.  I love training those that really want improvements, so I work with clients' budgets so that they can meet their goal.  I'm not in it for the money so my rates are low.  I freelance my training services, I don't work at a club.

RC: Which is your favorite photograph of yourself, and why?

JT: Probably the one in the white dress shirt where I'm smiling.  It represents me most I'm told.

RC:Will you be at the Romantic Times conference in Daytona next spring?  If not, when are you making public appearances in 2006?  Where can your admirers go to find out more about you?

JT: Most likely I will be there, I'm planning on it at least, unless something comes up.  I'll be re-doing my website shortly, which will have more up to date events on it.

RC:  Is there anything I have not asked that you would like to mention?

JT: Well, I recently got married ( October 30th, 2005 ) and would love to shoot a romance cover with my wife.  She's Persian and is very exotic looking with all the right curves for a cover Model.  She's a Model as well and we work a lot together.  We recently starred in a music video together, a Malibu restaurant commercial, and various stock photo shoots.  Those will all be on my new site as well.

RC: Thank you very much for a wonderful interview, Jimmy Thomas.

Riana set the robe across the back of the vanity chair and shed her clothing. The full-length mirror drew her attention. She crossed the floor to it and took a moment to study her reflection.

The scar across her chest and neck was all that remained from her battle with an Enterran Tarmeiser long ago. The beast had nearly killed her, forcing her to seek the healing properties in hot salty water. For three days she'd lain in a pool of swirling, steamy water. Her body's secondary systems had kicked in, allowing her to breath through her skin, as all her kind did. She'd slept the entire time, blissfully lost in dreams.

Beneath the golden skin, another common attribute, long cords of muscle rippled and flexed. Her strength was her most sacred attribute, because it meant she could defend Willis from most anything.

She trailed her fingers down the sides of her hips and thighs, studying the eruption of goose flesh that followed. Her skin was warm and soft, and yet she felt strangely detached from it. From her own body. From life.

"Some day," she said softly.

God, she hurt.

The nagging little voice inside her head called her a betrayer to her own kind. An abomination. Not only had she had a child out of bondlock, now she'd turned away her benekeda. She didn't belong with her people.

Outlaw, it cried.

"Proscribere," she echoed in her own language.

Misfit, it screamed.

"Insurgo," she repeated. "I know all that. It was my choice and yet not a choice at all."

A knock on the door made her jump. She scrambled for her robe, donning it quickly before opening the door.

Jason stood before her, a large cup in his hand. His mouth opened but he said nothing. He studied her face a long moment before his gaze lowered. The robe hung conspicuously off one shoulder, exposing the soft swell of her breast. As if he couldn't take his eyes off her, he just stared. Hungry. Needy. Aching for relief.

Like her.

The stark, raw sensuality emanating from him was overwhelming. She stepped back, astounded and mesmerized by the sheer power that surrounded him. His gaze, hot, ravenous, roamed over her face, her hair, her breasts, down to her toes and back again. His body cried out for hers, pleaded for the warmth of skin against skin. They were of the same essence. He needed to bind himself to her, now and for all time, just as she did. Nothing but the sacred words and conjoining of flesh and blood would ease the pain.

But she couldn't allow it.

Another step back. She felt naked, despite the plush material surrounding her. Her cheeks heated to the point of discomfort. "Jason?"

Still he said nothing. Seconds passed before he reached out to grasp a lock of her hair. She watched his long fingers sift through it, felt the scorching heat of two immortals perfectly matched to one another. In spite of herself and her need to put all this behind her, she did feel the call of his lifeforce, the cry of a soul, abandoned by its mate.

Dear God, it hurt.

Before she could stop herself, she curled her fingers around his muscular forearm then skimmed long fingernails down the length of it. A mistake she realized too late.

He took in a sharp breath. His eyes darkened and the pupils enlarged. "Riana," he whispered, his voice thick and low. "Don't walk away from me." He lowered his gaze to her mouth.

He'd hungered for her, and had waited all these years for her while she'd blindly gone about her business, unaware she even had a mate. And worse, she'd unwittingly gone and changed the rules. She already had the love of her life, which left no place for Jason.

"I can't." With that, she took a step back. Away from the strong man standing in front of her. Away from the hands that could've caressed her skin, the soft mouth that would've taken hers again and again.

Away from the hard body aching to weld itself to hers.

His dark golden gaze, laced with bitterness, shot back up to hers. "Drink," he said, handing her the cup.

She took it and looked at the contents. Blood. His blood. She saw the freshly healed cut on his wrist. He'd given her a precious part of his life, and had asked for nothing in return. "Thank you," she breathed.

"Don't mention it." He spun and left without looking back.

Slammed the door. Again.

Atrox, the voice whispered.

"Yes, cruel," she admitted. "I don't mean to be. What else could I have done?"

RC Everyone seems to be talking about cover art these days. It’s the time of year for the Cover Art awards contests, and also a lot of buzz—if not controversy--about artwork and computer artwork has been generated by http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php

So, when I discovered that versatile and talented cover artist Vanessa Hawthorne has worked with both, I jumped at the chance to talk with her.

Vanessa, you have worked with both?

VH Yes, I’ve done both Poser images and worked with a real model.  Each has its pros and cons.  Both are lots of fun.

Author’ note: By really cool coincidence Vanessa Hawthorne did this absolutely gorgeous cover.

RC Why is a real model more difficult?

VH With a Poser image, you can go back and change the position or the eye color, or whatever needs changing.  You have absolute control over the image.  When working with a real model, you have photographs and things like the pose, hair color and style, clothes, are all set and unchangeable.  You *can* work with hair color and style a little, but it’s very difficult (for me, anyway).

RC Why do Poser people faces look like they are wearing death masks?

VH In my opinion, it all boils down to experience and talent using Poser.  I’ve seen some incredible Poser images that just floor me.  I’ve also seen some awful, plastic-y images.  It’s not really fair to comment on those because it takes time to master Poser.  Skill and a decent collection of clothes, props, backgrounds, and character textures don’t happen overnight.

Author’s note: I chose to use Vanessa’s Reaper here because of the reference to death masks. I do not mean to imply that I think this image looks like a death mask… but if it did, in this case it would be appropriate.

RC How is it that the masculine chests and abs are so fantastic and legs etc are sometimes less successful?

VH Again, it’s skill because thighs and shins can be changed to match a muscular torso.  Paying attention to every little detail, down to the position of each finger and toe, helps to create a more realistic Poser image.

RC Are Poser people used because they are faster or cheaper or both?

VH It really depends on the model and the cover artist.  Really good artists are expensive.  The standard model contract allows for a certain percentage of the gross sales, so depending on that author’s sales, the model could be expensive too.

I’ve been seeing more and more stock photographs used on covers, which offers more variety than traditional cover models.  I have to admit a preference for these kinds of covers.  To my mind, they provide the best opportunity to create a professional, appealing cover for a wide range of genres.

Cover of Christopher

RC Do you have access to stats which would show whether Poser covers sell less well than real-model/artistic covers?

VH Unfortunately, I don’t.  My belief is that an unappealing cover will not attract much interest in the story, especially if the author is less well known.  I don’t think it matters if the cover is a Poser image or a model.  If it’s not well done, the book stands a better chance of being passed over in favor of an exciting, striking cover.

RC As a cover artist, what do you think of the Smart Bitches Trashy Books discussions?  ( http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php/weblog/C12/

VH I think they’re funny.  None of my covers have been up there (yet) but if/when that day comes, I’ll have to laugh with everyone else and try to do better next time.

RC What other insights can you share into the world of cover art creation?

VH There isn’t much space to work with on a cover.  Some of the requests I get aren’t realistic.  People come up with details that simply wouldn’t show up well or at all.  My feeling is the less detail you put on a cover, the more appealing it’s going to be.  The goal is to create some excitement about the book.  I haven’t always been successful, but that’s what I try to do, while still giving the author what he or she wants.  They have to love their covers or they’re not going to want to promote them, and I don’t want that to happen.  So, I’m willing to work with an author, no matter how long it takes.  I’m happiest when they run out to have posters made.  Then I know I’ve done my job.

Thanks, Rowena, for the opportunity to talk about my work.  I appreciate it so much!

'You did not enter into this betrothal willingly?" Tristan interrupted her.
'Nay." Haith shook her head and hiccoughed. ''Tis true, I had no choice, but?"
'Why, Haith? Why would Nigel see you wed to a commoner when to make you a noble match would benefit him?"
Haith became more agitated when Tristan would not release her. His probing eyes unnerved her and she feared she would accidentally misspeak. She struggled to move away from him.
'Nigel mustn't find out that Donald is imprisoned. If he does, he will come for me." Her voice shook with the tension she felt. 'And I will not return to Seacrest!"
Tristan held firm. 'Calm yourself, Haith. If I am to help you, you must explain to me exactly what danger Seacrest holds for you."
Haith ceased her struggles and looked at Tristan with all the sadness she felt. 'You of all cannot help me."
'Yea. I can." Tristan slowly brought a hand to her cheek and gently brushed a tear away with his thumb, skimming the bruises she'd received from Nigel's hand. He then lowered his head and kissed her there tenderly.
For a fleeting moment, Haith let the touch of his lips soothe her. Then she turned her head, denying herself the forbidden comfort. 'Do not be kind to me, Tristan. My only concern must be for my sister."
Tristan took her chin gently to face him once more. He lowered his head until his lips hovered over hers. ''Tis not your sister who concerns me."
He kissed her then, gently, as if he feared she might bruise from the light touch. Haith's lids fluttered closed, sending a single teardrop sliding down her face to melt into the seam of their joined mouths.
Tristan raised his head a scant inch from Haith's face. She felt the nearness of him with her entire being, reveled in it, her eyes closed and her lips slightly parted. She sighed.
'Haith," he said, rousing her from her reverie. 'We have much to discuss."
'Yea," she breathed, lost in the shimmery glow of his kiss, before realizing her words. Her gaze widened. 'I mean, nay. Mayhap when you are married?"
'Shh," Tristan whispered, drawing a finger across her lips. 'The betrothal will not stand. I plan to petition the king for its dissolution."
Haith shook her head vehemently and opened her mouth to speak, but Tristan thwarted her attempt once again.
'Nay. We will untangle this web together, Haith. But not now." He drew her away from the wall with his arm across her back and led her into the hall.
'Barrett will accompany you to Minerva for your care. Seek your bed, rest." He stopped in the center of the great room to stare into her eyes. 'When you rise, seek me here and we shall talk. Will you do as I ask?"
Haith searched his face for a long moment, as if seeking her own answer there. 'Yea," she said finally. She longed to pour out the fear and anger and regret in her heart to Tristan and be rid of it once and for all. But if she warned him of Nigel's plans now, what future would Bertie be cast to?
At that moment, however, Haith could only comprehend the closeness of Tristan. His broad chest was mere inches from her cheek, and his body heat radiated from him like a gentle sun, his blue eyes darkened with intensity. The urge to touch him was overwhelming.
She reached out a palm and placed it on his chest over his heart. He felt so solid and strong and real. Mesmerized as she was, the truth wobbled on her tongue.
Tristan covered her hand with his own, giving her the courage to ask, 'You will not disappear again when I wake?"
'Nay." There was no hint of amusement on his face. 'I'll not leave you again." And to Haith's thrill, as well as her dread, he lowered his head to kiss her once more.
His intention had merely been to comfort, but when Haith raised her arms to encircle his neck and draw him closer, the comforter turned into the one in need of solace. The taste of her against his mouth was like water to a man dying of thirst and he drank of her. He took from her with a longing to fill the great, empty place inside of him, to begin to fill the aching void left by too many years of war, too many years alone and without love. Years when he'd had only his dreams of her for sustenance.
With Haith in his arms, Tristan felt the weight of loneliness lift and his fatigue vanish, to be replaced with a pulsing, warm light that encircled them both. His mouth tugged at her lips and she answered his request willingly. Her hands cradled his head, fingers tangling his hair and skimming lightly along his jaw.
Tristan's embrace drew her gently closer still, until their bodies bowed with their nearness. His splayed hands on her back pressed her to him as if the pair would melt to form one being.
A startled gasp within the hall broke the spell of Tristan and Haith's kiss and both their heads turned to seek the interloper.
Ellora stood in the hall's open doorway, her outline in dark contrast to the sunny bailey beyond.
And behind Ellora, eyes fixed in shock on the sight before her, stood Soleilbert.

FIVE ANGELS

Fallen Angles Reviews

"I really like Cherry’s writing; it is literate and fast moving, with active imagery, and it challenges the reader. .... The story has a very sexual ambiance, but it is definitely science fiction with romantic elements, rather than the other way around. I definitely enjoyed this installment and look forward to reading more about the world of the Great Djinn."
